Review on Buey Tahan Seafood! These are for the Punggol outlet and Sembawang outlet. So sometime late last year, there was lots of advertisement on IG about this new halal seafood place that serves Nasi Lemak Crab etc.
The Punggol branch that is located near Sumang LRT.
So for one of the team dinners, we decided to head to try this hyped up outlet.
What was ordered?
- Chilli Crab
- Tom Yum Seafood Soup
- Cereal Prawn
- Cereal Chicken
- Crispy Baby Squid
- Sambal Stingray
- Kangkong in belacan
Price: I think it was slightly more than $150
My first impression
Good Cereal prawn was nice, not the best but still pretty good.
Baby squid. Yum
Bad
The Chilli crab wasn't very nice. Didn't leave any impression. Tom Yum was also mediocre. Sambal Stingray is more on the sourish sambal. Not a big fan of the sambal. Kangkong in belacan, normal.
Cereal chicken. Bland.
Overall I would say, Chilli Crab is probably not their speciality. Will not reorder any of the bad dishes. Good thing for seafood places like Buay Tahan, they have a variety of food to choose from so, if you tried a dish and don't like it, maybe you might want to try another dish, they might ace that dish instead and leave you wanting more.
The Sembawang Branch that is located Opp Sembawang Sec Sch
It was during the fasting month and was celebrating Mother's Day! (also, only for takeaway, cos Covid)
What we ordered?
- Salted Egg Crab
- Cereal Prawn Regular
- Butter Fried Crab
Price: <$100
Food taste. Good
- Cereal Prawn
- Salted Egg Crab
- Butter Fried Crab
Which is everything we ordered. It was delicious! They use Mud Crab. Why? Meatier!
Experience
We had wanted to just order and deliver to doorstep, which unfortunately their doorstep delivery was only available for 10pm. (no go because breaking fast at 7.09pm). So we headed down to the location which is just about 10mins away from our house anyway.
Upon ordering, we were told by the staff that the wait will be about an hour-long wait as they were really busy due to Mother's Day orders. We didn't mind it since we could head to the nearby supermarket to buy some groceries as well. The staff even jokingly said in Malay ( I think she is Malaysian, " kalau nak balik nak tidor ke, mandi ke, atau jalan-jalan, then nanti mari pon boleh". Which is translated to, "if you want to go home and sleep or bathe or just walk around also can". Thank goodness for a pleasant ordering experience. There was a lot of delivery riders from Grab and Foodpanda just waiting for the orders. I just wonder how many wasted orders they could have fulfilled while just waiting on this order. Hope it was worth it for them and the customers don't cancel.
When we received the order, we kind of expected there to be a lot more. I would rate the price for yield for crab dish is on the expensive side especially for a family of 6. If you can't splurge on a crab for each person, I would suggest buying those sides like the Cereal Prawn, Baby Squid and others so you get to taste a lot more dishes and be filled at the same time. It also has a harder shell. I think we are too used to the Flower Crab's and end up biting the shells to get the meat and juices out and for Mud Crab's don't even do it, the shell is thick and you can possibly chip a tooth from trying to gnaw your way into the shell.
Summary
From my experience from eating at several seafood places in Singapore, the quality of food is dependant on the chef's skills. My family have patronised a specific seafood restaurant for years only to end up never going back after the taste of the food changed due to a change of chef. We always looked forward to heading there for special occasions and having a feast. That restaurant was part of our childhood. So the experience for Buey Tahan Seafood is inconsistent amongst the stores, but the second try definitely redeemed itself. I would definitely come back to buy some other dishes to try. Especially their novelty dishes like Oreo Cheese Crab!
